2024 Biosecurity Audit and Biosecurity Case Studies from Australia and New Zealand

In 2024, a third-party review of biosecurity was undertaken by two New Zealand based experts for six of the eight Channel Islands (San Nicolas, Santa Barbara, Anacapa, Santa Cruz, Santa Rosa, San Miguel), with a goal of identifying how current management and actions for biosecurity can be improved. To strengthen value, the reviewers also provided multiple case studies from Australia and New Zealand, with relevant insight into biosecurity circumstance here in California.

The audit was hosted by TNC and undertaken with the cooperation of the US Naval Base Ventura County and the Channel Islands National Park, with all three openly engaging the reviewers. The audit also benefited greatly from insights provided additional Channel Islands stakeholders, and island biosecurity managers in Australia and New Zealand, who generously shared time, knowledge, and expertise. A huge thank you to all those who supported this effort!

This audit serves as an invaluable overview of prioritized recommendations to protect a shared legacy in the Channel Islands, and these case studies provide excellent insight into how common biosecurity challenges have been tackled elsewhere.
